Creating Balance in a Chaotic Lifestyle

It’s a never-ending journey: balancing life, career and everything else.

There’s a line from the movie “The Devil Wears Prada” where Nigel says to Andrea (Anne Hathaway): “Let me know when your personal life goes up in smoke; that means it’s time for a promotion”.

A lot of us would agree to this. It’s common to expect that when you start doing well at work, there is another aspect of your life that you start to neglect.

There is that famous kasabihan, “Career muna bago love life”. Why is that? Who said it always have to be that way?

Believe me when I say, It’s possible. It can be achieved. Whatever picture you have of the life that you want, you have the power to create it.

But… you have to know what it is you truly want. And you shouldn’t have to feel guilty about it. You deserve all the best life has to offer.

It all starts with one simple question: What do you want?

Write it all down. I do this every year, sometimes every month. I write down all the things that I want to do/achieve. Like read a book, hike a new mountain, finish a course, learn a new skill.

Balance is a result of your lifestyle being in alignment with your Self.

It all starts with You. Then everything else follows. Or else, Life will drag you and take you places you don’t wanna go or make you do things you don’t really want to do.

Best example is choosing a career path. If you don’t know what you want to become, you’ll end up wasting four years of your life studying a skill that you probably wont be using when you get a job. Then, you end up in a routine of forceful labor which results to hating your life. You lose balance.

Bring back the balance in your life by starting with yourself. Contemplate, meditate. Don’t be afraid to ask the heavy questions.

Do your own research. Read a book. I personally love the concept of Ikigai, which you can learn more about on my other blog Ikigainism. I also love the latest book of Bo Sanchez and Doc Didoy titled Whole Again.

Balance is not something you find. It’s something you create.

A few things I do to maintain balance everyday:

  • No phones the first hour after waking up.
  • Meditate ( Either pray the rosary, read the gospel, listen to Zen music, slow breathing – I learned this from reading Whole Again, how to breathe properly).
  • I check with myself: How am I feeling today? How am I emotionally, physically, spiritually? (I usually do this at a park or in church).
  • I stay active. If I’m too busy to work out, I walk a lot. It’s like riding a bicycle, to keep your balance, you must keep moving.
  • I spend time with the people I love. I can’t emphasize how crucial this is. Spend time in loving relationships. Have breakfast with your parents. Walk your dog. Laugh with your partner. You need to start your day with laughter and love.

Create your balance today. Start with You. Start with the decision to honor your desires and needs.
